"We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects." -Herman Melville

Last night, for the first time since I left, I truly missed New York. It was 93 degrees, and I was taking the bus to the NW to meet a friend from meditation at a Mexican place for happy hour. It seemed to be taking forever, and it wasn’t that far. Wasn’t that one of the reasons I left New York? Easier, quicker travel around a smaller city? So… it still takes 45 minutes to get anywhere that is not in the SE (my neighborhood) or downtown. I was bummed. As annoying as NYC transport was, it went everywhere. The buses here go everywhere too… it just takes longer.

But… 90 degrees here is like 80 degrees in the east and Midwest. There’s no humidity, so it’s not at all sticky. Not only do I not have AC, but I don’t even have a fan, and I’m comfortable!

And then… on the bus, on the way home, I loved Portland again. It was dusk, and still warm and breezy. And absolutely perfectly gorgeous… the twilit horizon was painted soft shades of lavender and salmon, reflected in the Willamette as we (the bus takers) crossed over one of the many bridges. And I felt, again, at home.
